Wow. Where do we begin? In some shape or form DC sports have literally stolen all the headlines (good and bad) in the last few weeks.
Capitals-
The Caps are the pride and joy of DC sports later and bring the most promise. The team is led by Alex Ovechkin but has SIX other players with 20+goals. The team had it's first ever sweep of their hated rivals, The Pittsburgh Penguins and won the President's trophy for most points by a team in the season. Everyone is hoping the gap-toothed Russian can bring Lord Stanley's Cup to DC.
Wizards-
I am going to stay away from this for personal political reasons right now
Nationals-
The Nats are coming off another tough season. The off-season was high-lighted by the signing of stud pitcher Scott Strasburg. They made headlines on Monday after opening day when Nationals Park was over run by Phillies fans. People estimated that the park was 75% Phillies fans. The Post and the Examiner have ripped the Nats for selling to Philly fans. Bottom line is this. If people realllllly wanted to go, wouldn't they have put together group tickets back in February? Not to mention I think only 2 of my friends even went to opening day.
Redskins-
Danny boy does it again. The Redskins traded their 2nd round pick and a conditional 3rd or 4th round pick for former Eagles QB Donovan McNabb. McNabb,33, is a 6 time pro-bowler, led to the Eagles to 5 NFC Championships, and 1 super Bowl appareance. This surely means Jason Campbell's time in DC is over. We will see how much of the team's trouble's have been Jason's fault about halfway through the season. In the meantime I am just going to sit back, and wait for the NFL Draft.

Redskins+Free Agency
Ok I know it's been awhile but here we go.....As a proud Redskins fan, the first day of free agency is usually filled with hope brought forth by big signings. This didn't happen this season. A lot of people are already getting on the Skins case about this. "Why didn't we bring in Peppers? Why didn't we bring in Dansby." Relax. Coach Mike Shanahan and General Manager George Allen are clearly trying to establish a new way of doing things in D.C. Gone are the overpaid free agent signings and hopefully replacing that ideology will be building through the draft like the Patrios and Steelers do every year.
Last year Albert Haynesworth was the lead story on free agency day when he signed a contract that was 7 years/100 million. This contract is ridiculous for anyone outside of Peyton Manning. Has Haynesworth been effective? Yes. Has he been worth his contract so far? No. The bottom line is the Redskins are making a concious effort not to sign anymore past their prime/only care about the money guys anymore. This alumni includes Deion Sanders, Bruce Smith, etc.
All this leads up to a question that will inevitably lead to another question. 1. What are the Redskins going to do with Jason Campbell and who do the Skins draft at #4?
Well the Skins "tendered" Jason Capmbell meaning they offered him a 1 year deal with $3.3 million a year and if someone wants to sign him they will match that offer and have to give us their first round pick and third round pick. I like Jason, but let's be serious, no team is going to give that up for him. As far our 4th pick goes I am hoping we trade down and stack the O-line but something tells me we might trade down and pick up Tony Pike, the QB from Cincinati and an O-lineman. Big Changes in DC!
So Danny boy pulled another rabbit out of his hat and brought in 2 time super bowl winner Mike Shanahan to be the new head coach of the Skins. Although John Gruden was my first choice, this guy is a close second. This guy is an offensive GENIUS! He is well renowned for his zone blocking and being able to turn everyone and anyone into a 1,000 yard rusher. Needless to say I am excited. His press conference to announce his hiring is today at 2 pm. The very first question is abviously going to be..."WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO AT QUARTERBACK?!" and the second question is "What are you planning to do with your fourth overall pick?"
I really have no idea what he will do. This is what I would support.
1. Give Jason Campbell a 2 year deal. You don't need to pay this guy the world. 2 years/9 million should get it done. Keep the guy hungry. Campbell had a career high in yards, touchdowns, and completion percentage. He is rated the number one QB free agent. The 2nd is Daunte Culpepper. That would be the 2nd worst signing in franchise history.
2. Draft an OL with the pick! Do not, I repeat DO NOT draft Sam Bradford. The guy has chronic throwing shoulder problems. He has missed like 6 games in the past 2 seasons. That includes sitting behind a great O-line at Oklahoma too. He won't have that level of comfort in D.C.
I have said it time and time again, you don't need a phenemonal QB to win the super bowl. All you need is a great offensive line and RB. The 2 worst QBs to ever win the Super Bowl are easily Mark Rypien and Trent Dilfer. They both had great offensive lines though. Control the line of scrimmage and you control the game.
3. 2nd Round pick you have to go O-line as well. Samuels is going to retire, we never replaced Jansen, Heyer sucks, Dockery is good, and everyone else blows. I don't believe we have a 3rd round pick and 4th round I think you need to draft a DB. Our linebackers are great and they are a dime a dozen for the most part.
Either way Shanny and Bruce Allen have their hands full. Lets hope Danny boy stays out of it and lets them do work.

Skins ALMOST did it
Well the Skins broke all our hearts again this weekend. I'll be honest I wasn't there, I was thinking we were going to get KILLED and I wasn't in the mood to witness that on a cold and rainy Sunday. I did watch the game from the Caesars poker in AC (again see the blog title ;)) I saw some really great things. One, the Saints are the best team in the NFL. Two, They are a favorite to win the super bowl, three, have the highest scoring defense in the NFL and we took them to OT. Of course we gave up a 4th quater lead but that isn't what people are going to remember from this game.
1. Sean Suisam's missed FG.
I seriously might go up to the high school and videotape myself kicking a 22 yd fg. I have succesfully kicked one before.
2. LaRon Landry is a cone
Ok so he had 12 tackles but 2 of the TDs were his fault.
3. Jason Campbell threw an INT.
Did you miss the 350+yds he threw for and his 60+ completion percentage?
Now the Skins are in trouble and at a crossroads. Zorn HAS to be fired. I'm not in favor of blowing up the whole system but the team is going to finish 4-12 and you can't justify keeping the coach with that record.
Who the QB is won't matter depending on who is coaching the team. Campbell is the best thing out there right now. Give him a 2 year deal. Drafting a QB would be the stupidest thing we can do. If that doesn't work out its going to set us behind another 5 years.
Outside of all that. The weekend was awesome. Simon and I left for AC at 8 am on Saturday. Kinda funny how I struggle to wake up at 715 am for work during the week and I can just shoot up if I know I am going to AC. haha. Denissa, Britney, and Sung met us all up there too. They all went out the night before so they didn't leave until 1 pm or so and Simon and I were already there for over an hour when they had left.
We stayed at Harrahs. The poker action was juicy. Entered the 1:00 tournament as an alternate. Got all my money in with A-Q of Spades. Flop came queen high with 2 spades, got called in 2 spots by q-j and q-10, and an off suit 10 hits on the river. Hit some big hands playing cash, some people hit some gut shot straights on me but I came out on top. Headed over to Trop to play table games with everyone else. Played blackjack for 15 minutes, lost $10, then we all started playing Craps. Table got REALLY hot and we all made bank, we left got late night food, passed out, woke up after a few hours sleep, took the under in the STl-CHI game (winner!) lost some cash back playing cards then went home. Great weekend.

The beauty of the NFL
So the Skins went 2-6 yesterday which was terrible to watch to say the least. To see all my boys go out there and play like they don't even care is really gut-wrenching. Wathing missed tackles, blown coverage, dropped passes, and terrible blocking has become standard pieces of watching any Skins game.
In a few months after the season is offically over is when it will get interesting. Soon the NFL will announce an uncapped year for the 2010 season. What this means is that teams will be able to pay their players whatever they want for that year and cut players without having that number count against the cap. I used to get really mad about players like Terrell Owens, Anquan Boldin, and Warren Sapp when they would say they "outperformed their contract." Bottom line is this. If you can get cut for not performing, you should be able to demand a raise for overperforming.
You think Dan Snyder isn't licking his chops waiting for this announcement? Say goodbye to Jason Campbell, Clinton Portis, Randy Thomas, Stephon Heyer, Cornelius Griffin, and Laron Landry just to name a few. Not to mention the coaching staff. You notice how much Fox was showing Zorn yesterday in the first half? They were showing him more then Jack Nicholson at a Laker's game. Every bad play in the first half they showed Zorn, almost to say "is this the play that causes him to walk off the field?" So terrible.
It should make for a great soap opera. You all see who the best free agent quarterback on the market is? It's Jason Campbell. Not even kidding. It's going to be a long 3 years before we can do anything.

Athletes and Celebrities I HATE
Good morning everyone. Happy Friday, today I wanted to go over a list of athletes and celebrities I really, really, really hate. It could be for several reasons why I hate them, they might have hurt one of my favorite players, they might have been really close to signing with one of my favorite teams and gone somewhere else last minute, they have cost me a ton of money on a game, or they might just flat out be a douche. I think I might just feature a handful of people/teams/movies every Friday. There is just too much hatred for just one blog.
Shaquille O'Neal
Is it just me or is that every time I hear him speak, I feel like I get just a little dumber? plus he thinks he is really funnny. What he doesn't get though is that people are laughing at him not with him. Shaq also broke locker room code when he came out and outed fellow teammate Kobe Bryant about his infidelity. Shaq got what he deserved because his wife left him and he writes a big fat check to her every month. Bottom line: I hope Shaq fails miserably in Cleveland and Lebron goes to a bigger market team like the Knicks.
Brett Favre
Do I even really need to get into this one? Don't get me wrong, I have seen Favre win some good games, but the guy has ZERO class. The guy comes out and says he is addicted to painkillers (the NFL is a painful job and you aren't the only one, wanna trade paychecks?), He talks about retirement every year and then ends up playing last minute. He is done this every year since 2002. The Packers used a first round pick on Aaron Rodgers who would have been a star in this league a long time ago had he he not had to wait behind Favre for so long. The worst part is everyone seemed to care about his "will he or won't he retire to talk." I couldn't watch ESPN for more then 5 minutes without seeing a piece on "the latest about Brett Favre." Nothing makes me happier in this life then watching Brett Favre do something to lose the game for his team. The back to back interception and fumble 2 weeks ago against the Steelers was hilarious. Stop playing Brett please.
Dane Cook
Ok, so I want to know.....who told this guy he was funny? This guy is such a no talent hack yet teenage girls love him so he sells out Madison Square Garden 2 nights in a row. I think I would rather stick needles in my crotch then ever watch his stand-up in person.
"Do you ever notice when you are having sex with a girl and you start talking in 'ol English?"
Um. No Dane, no I haven't.
The true mark of a good stand up comedian is whether you can listen to his stand up without any visual and still laugh. Dane, walks up and down the stage for an hour making pathetic observations that no one gets but still gets girls to laugh because he is a good looking dude.
If you want to see/hear some real stand up you need to check out the greats like Eddie Murphy, Richard Pryor, and Dennis Leary. Those guys always seem to make me laugh.
I once went on a work trip to Pittsburgh to see the Caps vs. Pens and Dane was staying in the same hotel as us. Needless to say after we lost, I went on an alcohol/stripper fueled tyraid and waited in the hotel lobby for 15 minutes waiting for Dane Cook's arrival. Wasn't sure what I was going to do if I saw him, but it wouldn't have been good for him. I mean even his own brother stole him from. Bottom Line: Dane Cook sucks.
Tonight you can catch me at Kilroys for Brett's Mom's bday party then heading to Blackfinn in DC and/or Arlington. Hit me up if you want to come. Until then.

Yankees Win It and Why You Root for the Teams you do
So the Yankees took the biggest payroll in sports history and turned it into a world championship. I am far from a Baseball fan, much less a fan of the Yankees and Phillies but it was kind of cool to see the Yanks win *27. I can't figure out how the Yankees can buy a Championship (The Yanks spent $424 million in the offseason between all their big free agent signings) yet the Redskins can't seem to turn their off-season spending into anything. PS. That $424 Million doesn't even include the $1.5 Billion stadium they built either.
Even more impressive then all that was watching Hideki Matsui win MVP. He is the first Japanese born player to win MVP honors in any major sport. "Godzilla" as he is known as gave his MVP speech honor via a translator. You think after being here for 10 years in the Big Apple he might have learned some English? Kind of pathetic and lazy if you ask me.
Let me tell you what really kills me about this series. It really seemed to me via facebook status updates and profile changes that my friends were split 50-50 between being Yankees and Phillies fans. I am calling "shenanigans" on this. If I haven't seen you ever wear a Yankees shirt, known that you were a Yankees fan via past conversations we have had, or seen a facebook status that says "Watching the Yanks" during the regular season then that is just pathetic.
It never ceases to amaze me how and why people root for the teams they do. Studies have shown that people devleop their allegiances to the teams they root for between the ages of 4-7. There are people who instead insist you rememeber that they have been rooting for the Patriots since '92. Sad huh?
I remember a kid on my hall freshman year at VCU said he was a UCLA fan because "my dad went on a business trip there when I was 13 and a client took him to a game and he brought me back a shirt from the game." Something tells me if his Dad's client took him to a Florida Atlantic Basketball game or a Washington St football game he wouldn't be rooting for those teams. Pretty nice coincidence that UCLA is the most succesful college basketball program of all time.
5 years ago when I was bartending in Richmond, VA at Rio Grande Cafe, a guy came into the bar and he claimed his teams as the Detroit Pistons, Pittsburgh Steelers, UNC College Basketball, and the New York Yankees. I stood there and berated the guy and ignored all my other customers. Needless to say I didn't make any money that night and the guy never came back. Good riddance!
Don't get me wrong, we live in a free country and you can root for whichever teams you want but just realize in this free country I have the right to make fun of you for it. :)
